Thursday Thoughts

Words
Are the weapons with which I battle

Tears
Are the waters the soothes my soul

Pain
Is the reality check that keeps me grounded

Dreams
Are the wishes that keep me moving

Creating
Is the outlet that builds understanding

Realization

Today a joke triggered me to respond with this post (also posted on Facebook)

As a proud South African I will not let the memories and experiences of my childhood and nearly 25 years of my life as a civil rights advocate and activist be destroyed by the corrupt and criminal human beings who are trying to destroy our resilience, love and peace.

I bow down to all the children, youth, women and men who are working hard and making a positive contribution to building our nation as a democratic and free society. Poverty and oppression can and should never be the scapegoat for violence, disrespect and wanton greed.

Our children, the next generation, need to work hard and learn to create their own legacies, finding their own places in society. The struggle for emancipation for poverty continues... prosperity can be measured in more than material things. Education, health and respect are three things that can take us many places. What do you think?

Realization

The nature of our poverty
Did not
Destroy our hope
Under the adversity
We learnt to cope
Our resilience
A true reflection of brilliance

The nature of Apartheid’s oppression
Did not
Destroy our souls
Under the repression
We learnt to rise above
Our survival
A true reflection of pure power

The nature of our victories
Did not
Destroy our humility
Under the instability
We found purpose
Our spirit
A true reflection of possible collectivism

Gaining Perspective

Sanity is hope treasured
Like a gift most precious

Pain is a reminder
That we are inherently humane

Happiness is joy
Shared like a surprise basket of goodies

Ecstasy is the victory
When we learn to let go

Survival is the triumph
At the end of each breath

Love is a cherished present
We dare not squander

Happy Memories

October 7th is the birthday of the Right Revd. Mpilo Desmond Tutu, Archbishop of Cape Town (Emeritus) I think about the privilege I had to work for him and when the time and place is appropriate I do not mind to drop his name as one person who had a huge influence in my life. When other people tell jokes about the jokes that he is so fond to make, I can tell jokes about me and him like the one where he called out to me across the courtyard one evening on our way home and I was proudly wearing a leather skirt made my mother… “ Hey Simone, where is the skirt to the belt you are wearing!” It was hilarious and I can still see him laughing and having fun with this youth from the countryside who had the chance to work for a Nobel Peace Prize winner and best of all, someone who saw in me the potential to be part of something great – building peace in our country.

Impressions of a youth all grown up

We are inadvertently shaped
By our interactions
With those around us

We always have the opportunity
To shape others
By our examples and choices wise

We are always interconnected
Conscious and unconscious
All part of one universe

We are always called to practice mindfulness
An understanding sometimes transient
Collectiveness a challenge, sadly less and less natural

We are never truly bound to be whom we were set out to be
The universe always converges
Calling on all to act conscientiously

Happy Birthday Baba, I appreciate the time I worked for you.

Happy Memories

You surprised me
On my 21st birthday party and we danced under the stars

We danced together
At the celebrations on the lawn on your 60th birthday party

Now you live there and I live here
Our lives forever linked by the long-ago contact over one year!

A lesson in each day

It seems as if
There is no longer space
For sentimentality
Choices
Driven by harsh realities
What a life calamity
Moving on
Still
Feels like nurturing
Inevitable
Tragedy

It seems as if
There is no room
For nostalgia
Reality
Driven by choices harsh
What a life tragedy
Moving on
Still
Feels like nurturing
Inevitable
Disappointment

It seems as if
This is the time to accept
Happiness needs no struggle
Growing older implies gaining wisdom
What a life opportunity
Moving on
Still
Feels like nurturing
Inevitable
Eventualities
