Transported

The mountains of my ancestral land
Beckons me
Slowly
I tread
Breathing
Wet
Cold
Air
Instantly
This picture
Transports me there

The flowers of my ancestral land
Lifts me
Slowly
I rest
Breathing
Clean
Wild
Sage
Instantly
This image
Claims my presence

The waters of my ancestral land
Cools me
Slowly
I sunk
Breathing
Fresh
Sparkling
Wet
This image
Awakens my senses

Saved Potential

I dug a hole
Displaced the soil
Built a stonewall
Potential
Collected
No other duties
In its execution
Neglected

We replaced the soil
Built a new frame
Gardening no feint-hearted game
Potential
Collected
No other duties
In its execution
Neglected

Voice of Reality

You make it
Alive
The brutal reality
Rape
The weapon
Reaping tragedy
Ruined lives
Requires
Ringing bells
Banging pots
Beating drums
Flushing out
Cowards
Causing
Destructive malady

You make it
Tangible
The silent reality
Disrespect
The weapon
Spreading catastrophe
Broken souls
Requires
Quiet voices
Strong choices
Supporting influences
Flushing out
Evil
Causing
Reproachful difficulty

He is so naked!

The emperor is naked
No one dares to tell him
Retribution
Lurking on every corner
Mystique and mysticism
In beliefs trapped
A nation
Gradually on the verge
Of losing political sanity
Poverty and pain
A brutal reality

The emperor is naked
No one dares to take a picture
Retribution
So close to the surface
Secrecy and piety
In beliefs trapped
A nation
Gradually on the brink
Of losing more than dreams
Rewards and reprisals
A brutal reality

Reeling in Reality

We lament
Other’s bad choices
Disappointed
Change
Never
As rapid as expected
Evil
In everyday actions
Sadly reflected

We regret
Our own choices
Disappointed
Change
Never
As rapid as expected
Good
In everyday actions
Sadly neglected

We discuss
The community’s choices
Disappointed
Change
Never as rapid as expected
Apathy
In everyday actions
Sadly repented

Auto-correction a Natural Instinct

Acceptance
Something we crave

Rejection
We attack with shame

Love
We want to autocorrect

Hate
We want to cast out

Laughter
We save as the best

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-31.

Pushed to Move On

Disappointment
A valid emotion
Quickly swept under the rug
Any attempt to keep it nurtured
Dismissed
As wastefulness

Rejection
A valid emotion
Rapidly rushed to get over
Any attempt to keep it nurtured
Dismissed
As useless

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-31.

Awareness

Charity of mind
Evades me

Consciousness
Plagues me

Reality
Stalks me

Awareness
Wakes me

Living
Frees me

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-30.

Up to the Charity Walk

I shuffle and puff
Pushing forward
Every step
Shaking
Every cell
The victory small
Happy
Once again
I did not
Break and fall

Evidence of Success!

Warming up before the race!

For Aunty Miena

Somewhere on a journey
Between eighty and ninety
Many hours
We talked about this time
When I will be
Grown up
And you will be older
Outliving all your peers
Nearly forty years
Happy Birthday Aunty Mientjie
For you
Three Cheers!

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-30.

Still Learning

Knowledge
Feeds me

Learning
Liberates me

Sharing
Humbles me

Searching
Surrenders me

Suffering
Builds me

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-30.

A new meaning to daybreak

Sunrise
At three in the morning
A complete new meaning
To the day’s dawning
Restless when night is falling
Day and night
Yawning

Staying Close

Everyday
We connect
Little notes
In digital code left
Fun and laughter
Pain and fear
My lovely daughter
You are
Always
So near

Every day
We interact
Pictures tell a story
Love and cheer
Sadness and worry
My lovely sister
Always
So near

Every so often
We connect
Lines ringing
Background music playing
What’s for dinner and reports on the odd doctor’s trip
No longer afraid of your voice whip
Daddy dear
We are near

On the odd occasion
We can lately interact
Family close, friends dear
Sharing titbits here and there
Chainmail
Sometimes wondering down memory lane
Moving on
All part of the game
Growing older
Sometimes means
Drifting away

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-30.

Scratching

This honesty
Too much
For your reality
Maybe all
Just a fallacy
In my life
Happiness always
Have to make peace
With tragedy

This reality
Too much
For your honesty
Maybe all
Just a myth
In my life
Expectations always
Have to make peace
With disappointment

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-21.

Coping with Rejection

Shame
Rears its ugly head
Insecurity
Suddenly has a new best friend

Pity
Digs a big hole
Self-doubt
Suddenly stops to pretend

Pain
Blankets every move
Denial
Calls every positive action, that of a fool

Sadness
Pervades every pore
Tragedy
Always seeks a happy home

A slave’s legacy could never settle in my soul

I imagine
I would not have been
A kitchen slave
Complacent next to the fire
Eating the scraps from the master’s table
By deceiving comfort softened
A mind assimilated
My soul ameliorated

I imagine
I would not have been
A field slave
Burnt by the sun
Beaten down for insolence
Welts of dissent scars my body
A mind lost in submission
My soul gradually inebriated

I imagine
I would have been
The runaway slave
Constantly questioning my captivity
Tasting freedom’s reality
Closed to other’s proclivities
A free mind always activated
My soul will never be anything but liberated

Un-Complicated

Quiet
The shovel and the pick today

Engaged
The scissors and the sewing machine unstrained

Quiet
The email today

Engaged
With a lovely daughter far away

Quiet
The sunshine behind the clouds today

Engaged
The wind in the forest playing

Quiet
The pen and notebook astray

Engaged
A mind down memory lane

Keeping Busy

Slinging mud
Today gained new meaning for me
Bucket loads of soil
Moved from here to there
Growing boxes
Its’ my wish that you will soon abundantly give

Rolling stones
Today gained a new meaning for me
Low walls well fitted
Time ticking by
Soon the seeds will see life
Slowly a body honed in training

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-15, I still have space for old skills.

Digging

Soft the rain
Cold the soil
The rhythm of the wind
Transforms
The forest to the ocean
Waves crashing
Splashed
In the spray
Salty
Only my sweat
Sweeter the ground
Must be
Counting the worms
Sliding away free

Soft the wind
Wet the rain
The rhythm of the spade
Transforms
The soil to a treasure chest
Patches alive
Splashed
In colour
Sweet
Its rich flavour
A taste sensation
Harvested
New growth
Stimulated free

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-14.

Gardening Again...

Voluntary hard labour
I trudge
Back and forth
Lifting
Buckets of clay
All in the job of the day
Gardening
Never as simple as child’s play

Growing more than clichés
When the going gets tough
The tough goes digging
Every gardener patiently waiting
Not a job for the feint hearted
No joking…

Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-14

Conferencing

Red wine
Good food
Great company
Kind voices
Positive choices
Conference calls
Opens up
New places

Round tables
Bittersweet coffee
Cold beer
Sharp questions
Raucous laughter
Dancing crazy
Networking
Opens up
Safe intellectual spaces

Plain water
Warm socks
Cold cuts
Carbon credits
Harnessing the sun
Debated
Newcomers and old hats
Peer reviewed
Ideas spread beyond isolated cases

Waiting in Want

Silently
I wait
Impatient with expectation
Life’s workings
Never wrapped up
In neat quotes
Well researched citations
An argument expressed
In twenty thousand words or less
Instead
We fumble and rumble
Getting lost in meanings
Living
Is not neatly packaged
At the editor’s console
Watching
Reality tv

Impatiently
I wait
Silenced in expectation
Life’s workings
Always unpredictable
Like the wind chimes on the porch
The slightest breeze elicits reaction
Instead
I want to have traction
Someplace to be
Living
Is not neatly ordered
Like a takeout meal
Waiting
Hunger’s quick fix

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-10.

Spring Showers

The weeping sky
Wipes
Everything clean
Little blossoms
Could have freshly gleamed
But
The sun is nowhere to be seen

The weeping sky
Follows
Everywhere I go
Big puddles
Could be brightly glowing
But
The sun’s absence is in its dullness showing

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-10.

Hovering on the Fringe

I
Revel in your world
Even
Just on the fringe
One idea
Critical thinkers from many corners
Want to harness the sun
Experiments
Run
One by one

I
Follow in your dream
Even just on the fringe
Many networks
Critical writers feast at the same table
The race is on
One by one
Run

Reasoning

Please don’t judge
My silence
As a lack of interest
Sometimes
One’s voice
Becomes
Entangled
In the ego
Lost in pride
Bickering with reality
Common sense misplaced

Please don’t judge
My absence
As total apathy
Sometimes
One’s participation
Becomes
Estranged
In the present
Lost in the crowds
Bickering about ideology
Astray from the community

Keeping it Light

A friend challenged me today about keeping my writing light. I think about this idea and wonder if his expression should influence what I write about or how I write about it.

Quite an interesting dilemma, do I only write when I have something positive or ‘light’s to say, or do I dare to drag my dark mood into the public domain?

Perhaps I choose to reflect on the voices I encountered in a conference, the latest documentary on TV, the evening news? At any point in life, or any moment we can find the dark and the light. The yin and yang… most days the news is almost all bad, the documentaries bear witness to the horrible nature of human behaviour, the need for balance is in our minds.

We keep the bright side up and hope that with time everything becomes bright. I will thus today try and write something light!

A labour of love

I rescue the little worms
That burrows in my garden
Valuing their service
Working hard
Just below the surface

I pluck the weeds
That grows in my garden
Devaluating their contribution
Just a common nuisance
Life better without their intrusion

I plant seeds of hope
That I hope will grow in my garden
Valuing their bounty
Expecting familiar pleasures
Like every other gardener I’ll expect to harvest a treasure

Debating the Value of Student Action

In Sweden there seems to be…
Generally
No discontent
Politics
Not only
For the malcontent
Solidarity
Not dependent on pure objectivity
Being affected
Projects the apathetic
To nurture action
Participation
Creates greater traction

In Sweden there seems to be…
Generally
No open challenges
Activism
Not only
To please the discontent
Involvement
Calls on pure humanity
Any cause worthy
Not dependent on
Risk adverse abilities

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-04. Written during the closing Panel Discussion of the CEMUS conference on Education for Sustainability.

Thursday's Thoughts

Development

Sacrifice = rewards
Rewards = recognition
Recognition = confidence
Confidence = action
Action = change
Change = growth
Growth = maturity
Maturity = Reality

By Simone B. Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-03.

Potential

A gardener’s love
Drove me to hard labour
Aching bones bears witness
A patch
Ready to bloom
Summer’s cusp
Arrives just too soon
Winter
On the horizon loom

By Simone B. Naik Noemdoe, 2012-05-04.

Worm Hotel

Our backyard
Hosts
A worm hotel
Little critters
Tunnelling away
Not the kind of guest
Who can come out and play

Suspended

We hover
Between
Empty and full
Asleep and awake
Busy and bored
Conscious
In the moment
Anything
But
Some omen

We loiter
Between
Happy and sad
Seriousness and laughter
Hot and cold
Aware
In the moment
Anything
But
Sure bliss

We saunter
Between
Silence and conversation
Seeing and blindness
Wisdom and ignorance
Thinking
In the moment
Anything
But
Time lost

We all have a signature tune –What is yours?

My signature tune
Will make you stomp your feet
Maybe
Like my ancestors
Stomped theirs
Around the fire
Marrying
The last rays of the sun
With the first rays in the morning
Chasing away
The winter cold
Before the colonisers came
And made us scramble and flee
Hundreds of years passed
And I can sing my song freely
Jumbled the words
But never
The stomp of my feet
Failing

My signature tune
Will make you bob your head
Maybe
Like my ancestors
Moved theirs
Around the temples
Marrying
The first mists of the evening
With the last mists of the morning
Before the colonists came
And made some of them leave freedom for hard labour
Decades passed
And I can sing my song freely
Messy the voice
But never
The rhythm of my soul
Failing

My signature tune
Will make you move with love
Maybe
Like you always have
Jigging along
In every place
Marrying
Night and day
Every season
Before life became a strain
Each day goes along
I can sing my song freely
Mixed-up ideas
But never
In seeking pleasure
Failing
