Advised

I once read somewhere
That one should not
Take yourself too serious
And so I pledge
To continue laughing at myself

I once understood
That one should not
Be too scared of fear
And so I promise
To continue challenging my fears

I once heard somewhere
That one should not
Stop dancing
And so I will always
Dance with simple abandon

I was once told somewhere
That one should not
Try to change the world
And so I will always
Work at taking better care…

Perhaps… the change I want will happen anyway…

Moving Forward

It is still me
Never mind the growing lines on my face

I’m still here
Never mind the developing waistline

Still around
Never mind all the grey hair

I keep on moving
Never mind slower pace I tend to walk

I’m still young
Never mind the realisation that my youth is gone

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, this week I realised my youth is gone! 2012-09-31

It’s Never Easy

I follow my heart and celebrate
Despite the pain along the way
Punishment couldn’t suppress
Creativity the salve for pain
Small victories paid forward
Living no easy game

I follow my dreams and celebrate
Despite the frustrations along the way
Setbacks never permanently oppress
Laughter the free balm for disappointment
Small triumphs shared
Eking an existence no easy fate

I follow my dreams and celebrate
Despite the crooked road along the way
Closed doors never permanently blocked
Strength the force against rejection
Small conquests a collective treasure
Advancing the core of living

Creeping Closer

We are connected
Blood of my blood

We are in exchange
Flesh of my flesh

We are of a similar mind
Children from the same matriarch

We are free to celebrate a collective identity
In heritage there is a disjointed unity

We are sure in being
Another generation celebrating creative spirits free

Endurance

I don’t have room for you
Lingering pain

I invite you in
Fun and laughter

I have no room for you
Endless worry

The door is open
Lingering love

I have no room for you
Pitying self-doubt

You are welcome
Sweet confidence

I have no room for you
Depression blue

There is a big vacancy for you
Precious inner peace

As Expected

The blush of midnight
No longer kissed by the morning sun
Only the waning moon
I can imagine
Autumn’s clouds
Covered my spot in a shroud

The blush of the breaking dawn
No longer kissed by the morning sun
Only the cold mist
I can imagine
Summers’ heat
Retreating like the low tide leaving the straying starfish dry

The blush of the evening star
No longer in my grasp
Only the grey sky
I can imagine
Wet kissing rain
Washing away lingering tired pain

Sold Out

Separation
Always at a cost

Participation
Often at a price

Collectivism
Comes at a premium

Captivation
Mostly as a compromise

Assimilation
Sold as a bonus

Integration
Offered as a victory

All-in-One

I see you
Little girl
No longer
Hiding in a corner
Standing tall
Bold and not too old
Still treasuring simple pleasures
Collecting broken shells like they are treasures

I see you
Reckless youth
No longer
Waving a banner
Finding peace
Growing inside
Despite the poor’s turmoil
Collecting broken stories like they cannot be otherwise recalled

I see you
Struggling woman
No longer chasing
Rushing to the rescue
Accepting fate
Sitting still
Creativity the centre of events
Collecting broken feathers setting peace free

A Sudden Realisation

My youth is gone
No regrets

My youth is gone
A good fight left behind

My youth is gone
Pain and victory I tasted from time to time

My youth is gone
Experience marks the way forward

My youth is gone
Learning marks every new day beginning

My youth is gone
All regrets buried

My youth is gone
Conventional wisdoms is what I will in future be bringing

Double Blind – Not Really

An identity
Captured in numbers

An identity
Expressed in colour

An identity
Treasured in history

An identity
Collectively inherited

An identity
Self-defining

An identity

Autumn Creeping Closer

My inner flame
Sputters and fights for survival
Like candle left in the rain
Yearning for reprieve
Fighting bravely
In the last moment retrieved

My inner smile
Disappeared somewhere in the night
Coughs sucked my lungs dry
Remembering the times it made me cry with pain
Pale sunshine throws me a weak lifeline
Quickly my face remembers how to light the world

My inner identity
Constantly at war with the universe
Cultural conventions trapped in the box squared
A heart and mind bared
Creativity the pathway to sanity
The bitter cold rain a wet reminder of reality

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-08-24.

Spirit Free

Play a love song for me
I want to shout
So I can dance naked
When in solitude
Swinging breasts
Keeping rhythm
Off-beat
Stomping deep
Authenticity
Sticks
Tenaciously
Sweet

Tell me a bedside story
I call quietly
So I can nestle gently
Naked knees kissing my belly
The sandman waiting
To carry me away
Morning beckoning quick
Breathing deep like the fire circle
A mind needs space to dream
Prayers easy to keep
Love
Burrows deep

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-08-24.

In and Out

Slipping
In and out of awareness
A wondering mind
Blessed and cursed
Creativity
Often
Capture
Sometimes
Dispersed

Slipping
In and out of focus
A creative mind
Clear and blurred
Brilliance
Often
Elusive
Sometimes
Captured

Slipping
In and out of reality
A searching mind
Light and dark
Awareness
Often
Uppermost
Sometimes
Underground

Saturday Night Reverie

Bitter coffee
Sweet koe’sisters*

Bitter losses
Sweet hopes

Bitter histories
Sweet futures

Bitter dreams
Sweet memories

Bitter tears

Irony

I was never
A formal student of philosophy
Often musing
Philosophically

 I never had the chance
To formally analyse the tragedy
Often encountering life
Tragically

I never understood
The meaning of utter cynicism
Often spewing frustrations
Cynically

I never realised
Life can often be completely black and white
Often navigating
Shades of grey

I never want to be
Completely un-free
Often celebrating
All of freedoms’ victories

Finding Inner Consensus

Eventually
We all are
Slaves
To our rituals
Imposed
Collected
Built
Integral to the being
That is how it seems

Eventually
We all are
Followers
Of our actions
Questioned
Developed
Deconstruction
Central to our understanding
That’s how it seems

Eventually
We all are
Executers
Of our wills
Accepted
Enacted
Procrastinated
Integral to our being
That’s how it seems

Inevitable Change

Summer
Slipped away
On my last journey
Darkness
Quickly fades in
Soon
The winter months
Fully begins

Youth
Slipped away
On yesterday’s back
Greyness
Quickly fades in
Soon
The change of life
Creeps closer

Searching

We mark
Our milestones
Counting
Scars and losses
Laughter and gains
Carefree moments
Battles for freedom
All the time
Expecting
Total liberation

We count
Our achievements
Marking
Years on the calendar
Keeping track of reproductive capacities
Qualifications collected
Jobs maintained
All the time
Wanting
Total approval

We accept
Our flaws
Gradually
Not getting the first medal
Failing at something somewhere along the way
Burying lost dreams
Getting used to the love handles
All the time
Comprehending
Total reality

Observing a Young Soul

I met an adventurer today
Her history to be told
Somewhere along the way
A strong spirit deep inside
Radiance in age defiant

I met a free spirit today
Her love of life collected
Somewhere along the way
A caring heart deep inside
Forthrightness in age reliant

I met an earth soul today
Her firm convictions collected
Somewhere along the way
A life of service on the surface
Honesty in age compliant

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-08-09. National Woman’s Day, South Africa… Aluta Continua! We will continue to battle injustice and inequality.

We continue to search for answers and trying to build a better nation for the protection and safety of women and particularly the girl child in South Africa and the world.

National Women's Day

Over the last 18 years of a free and democratic South Africa, the 9th of August is celebrated in honour of WOMAN of all ages. We celebrate our victories, lament our battles, pray for a better life and overall we defend our status as strong independent human beings.

This year I post a piecewritten by my sister Melissa Naik. She is a strong, independent, hard-working woman!

On 9 August 1956, between 10 000 and 20 000 woman from all over South Africa of all races, cultures and backgrounds marched to the union building in Pretoria to protest against the pass laws and to hand over a petition that was signed by woman from all over the country in protest of these laws. These women carried themselves with dignity and kept calm and composed throughout the protest, some carrying their children on their backs, others with their white boss’ children with them. Indian women with white sari’s, African women in their respective traditional garments all standing together as one voice.

These women are therefore honoured for their strength and courage during harsh times and for standing up for what they believed in and to show that they will not bow down and be oppressed and that they also have a voice in politics and the way they should be treated will be in the manner they carried themselves, with dignity.

I have always been told that there is no stronger woman than a woman born on the soil of Africa (By birth or by choice), no matter the race, cultural or religious beliefs as they have the ability to overcome adversity and rise above any difficult situation.

National Woman’s Day is not just a celebration for those ladies that marched in 1956 but it celebrates those Grannies raising grand kids, the girl child raising her brothers and sisters, the daughter looking after her family and many more countless women working tirelessly in 2012 to overcome adversity of the new ages. The silent prayer she says every night asking for miracles to happen when all seems lost.

So on the 9th August each year we celebrate the strength and courage or every woman and we tell the story or 1956 to little girls to inspire then to always reach higher and so that they can realize just how powerful they are.

“YOU STRIKE A WOMAN, YOU STRIKE A ROCK”

We consider our lives

We cultivate our decisions
With beliefs

Ownership

Our joys
Drive common paths

Our disappointments
Always linger as distant pasts

Our wishes
Collectively hunted

Our expectations
Gradually tempered

Our dreams
Slowly coming to fruition

Networked

We are in touch
But easily disconnected

We are connected
But easily distracted

We are distracted
But easily refocused

We are focussed
But easily wandering

We are wondering
But easily reconnected

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, thinking of the routines and life in a world and place where we have made a neutral culture and way of living, the same news headlines on satellite tv, the morning news in the same little boxes and most of all life slowly dictated by the templates in social networks. 2012-08-03.

Fixed

Pictures
Of the developed world
Affix to my mind
Like postage stamps
Determining
The distance concepts will travel
I marvel
Deep down
Questioning
Where it will unravel

Images
Of the diverse world
Affix to my mind
Like flashbacks
Determining
The time memories will remain
I marvel
Deep down
Wondering
How long can I still travel

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-31.

Home always in my heart

Africa
Gently blasts from the speakers
Voices
Long since departed*
Immortalised
Home
Always never
Far behind

Africa
Gently courses in my veins
Memories
Long ago buried
Materialised
Home
Always never
Left behind

Evolution

I spin and spin
Inside my head
No opportunity
To battle regret
Simple abundance
Integral to the set
Life a wondrous net

I spin and spin
Inside my bubble
No chance
To scrape and scratch
Simple choice
Central to the test
Love a beautiful net

I spin and spin
Inside my circle
No gamble
To remain whole
Simple living
Inside the realm
Constantly challenging truth to self

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-08-02.

We Are

We are all slaves
Some to ideas
Others to material things
Most
Chained to the vagaries of an ego
The most difficult thing
Is letting go

We are all free
Some can make the choice
Others have the voice
Most
Chained to the vagaries of systems saying no
The most difficult thing
Is letting go
