Shifting

In transience
I chase
Stability
Familiarity
Becomes like my skin
Rough
Like the soles of my feet
Soft
Like the tender insides of my thighs

In transience
I battle
Familiarity
Stability
Becomes like my shadow
Shifting
Like the tan-line on my back
Permanent
Like the grey roots on my head

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-31.

Moving Closer

Step by step
I cope
Never losing
Complete hope
Always a new tomorrow
Life
Never judged
By sorrow

Step by step
I live
Never wavering
In faith
Always a new challenge
Life
Never completely
Off balance

Step by step
I move
Never slowing
Always space for renewal
Life
Never sure
No one
Ever fully secure

Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-31.

Restoration

Strip insecurity
With fresh ideas

Build confidence
With three cheers

Strip negativity
With a check on reality

Build self-image
Beyond shallow vanity

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-31.

Divergent

Lingering
On the edge
Separated
By our diverse realities
Occasionally
I wonder
Why it feels like
Life is plagued
With tragedy

Hanging
On the edge
Lingering
On our common realities
Often
I wonder
Why it feels like
Life is filled
With opportunities

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-31

Opposite ends of the Earth

Down south
Winter
Drains its soul away
Sunshine
Blinks and winks
Along the way

Up north
Summer
Lingers often at bay
Sunshine
Ducks and dives
On a cloudy day

Mind the Gap

Science
Bridges the divide
East meets west
Veterans lead the novices
Ideas amalgamate
Concepts
Become
Less intricate

Young meets old
Chemistry leads reality

Witness

The scent of the eucalyptus
Permeates

The voices of the world
Resonate

The trees of the Old Testament
Commemorate

The open minds
Pontificate

The evening skies
Celebrate

Always an Activist

I seek
A place of peace
Away from worry
No time to tarry
Activism
Self-defining

I seek
A place of peace
Away from pain
No time to worry
Activism
Spell defying

I seek
A place of freedom
Away from chasing
No time for pain
Activism
Convention denying

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-11.

More than mere ideas

I tell
The tales of hardship

I rationalise
The reality of rejection

I contemplate
The fear inherent in living

I celebrate
The victory of survival

I understand
The vagaries of change

I hope
We will one day see true peace

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe. Reliving some of the historical and most recent experiences of Apartheid and Post-Apartheid South Africa, watching the Paul Simon Graceland Anniversary documentary – time passed but never to be forgotten. 1012-07-24.

What to Expect

Peace
On an empty belly
Tastes
Bittersweet

Freedom
Constantly negotiated
Feels
Un-liberating

Jubilation
Quickly suppressed
Shatters
Celebration

Expectations
Gradually degenerating
Crushes
Creativity

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-24.

Melancholy

Scatter my ashes
To the wind
My resting place
The same as my beginning
From nothing to nothing
In that no sin
An impact
Contained within

Scatter my dreams
In wild ideas
My legacy
Might someday be winning
From nothing to something
Surviving
Always
On the cusp of living

Scatter my wishes
Amongst your own
We all live
With things unfulfilled
Life not always
Wild and willed
Growing older
Leaves me gradually stilled

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-25.

Basically Busy

I boil the jam
Like you
Used to
In-between
Hanging washing
Stripping
Wooden floors of dust
Warming leftover curry
Today busy
From early morning until
Long after dusk

I nag and complain
Like you
Used to
In-between the spoiling
Baking all the favourite treats
Sometimes feeling
Only fit to claim defeat
Every summer now seems shorter
Every day I need to be smarter
Perhaps I am too much
Your daughter

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, thinking about my mother when I am cooking jam and cleaning the house, 2012-07-26.

Shaping an Unruly Mind

Slowly
The sanity of my soul
Unravels
Worry etched
So deep within
Despair
Makes me wonder
Where do I begin
I silently shout and cry
Why this fear?
Who next?
Will it be someone close?
My most precious dear

Slowly the reality
Of my disproportionate pain
Strikes!
Do deep within
Peace
Descend upon my soul
Rationality
A new reality
Move from one to two
The A, easily follows the B
Even I can see
These are only dreams
Driven
By an overtly conscious spirit free

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-28.

Polished, but never Perfect

Scraped
My smooth edges
Caught
Like a lost sheep
Tangled
In the rough bits
On the barbed wire
Wrenched free
Evidence
Swinging
In the morning breeze

Smoothed
My rough edges
Polished
Like the stone on a beach
Tossed
Amongst the debris
Of the breaking waves
Twisted free
Evidence
Shifting
In the moving tide

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012—07-24

Just Another Day

Today
I shaped
The tone of my destiny
A loud voice
Counting
Cheap tragedy
Thinking…
Is this me?

Today
I tripped
Over my own tongue hesitantly
An agitated voice
Courting
Resonance tragically
Wondering…
Am I crazy?

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-24.

Elusive

Mr Sandman
Give me
A moment of your time
I promise
It will be brief
Like a breath exhaled
A smile shared kind
Please
Bring my sleep deep
Precious
More than worrying dreams cheap

Mr Sandman
Give me
A fraction of the night
I promise
It will be quick
Like the knock on a door
A fine little breeze
Please keep me calm till morning light
More than restlessly battling malcontent

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-26.

Keeping Up

An active mind
Chases ahead
Idealistic paths mapped
In high expectations trapped
More than living in the moment
We cannot
Every day
Becomes a lifetime
Soon

Soon
Everyday a lifetime
Accumulated pain
Collected in baskets
Woven with laughter
Chasing the sun
In the shadows
Life all about
Ups and downs
With the special moments we are crowned

With special moments
Memories made to keep
Eventually chasing pain
To the scrapheap
New seeds
Grow amongst fallen trees
Watered with tears
Only the living weeps
Gradually
From misery we can creep

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-23 (typed, but written sometime earlier).

All Mothers Worry

I fuss
We fight

I worry
We create a truce

I wonder
We connect in cyberspace

I nag
We agree to disagree

I reconcile
We move forward

I surrender
We realise you are growing stronger and yet you will always be my baby

For Dawn, I love you. Hugs, Mamma Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-24.

A Final Goodbye

To Auny Miena (Wilhelmiena Daniels –nee Cupido)

She finally departed
Those left behind
Gathered
In her memory
I was not one of them
My goodbyes
Taken long before
When I could
Look her in the eyes
Expressing
An earnest thank you
A conscious I love you

She finally departed
The last in her line of siblings
Small and frail
Back to the childhood of her dreams
Safe with Mamma and Pa
Passing life along the way
Her presence no longer today
We will all go some day
Until then
I am glad our final goodbyes
Were alive
Maybe it will be a while
Before I will once again cry

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-24.

False Peace

At midnight
Everyone retreated
The pulsing streets
Offers freedom to roaming dogs
Another day gone
Tomorrow
The same battle to survive
Begins

At midnight
Everyone huddled
The pulsing beds
Offers relief to hustling users
Another day gone
Tomorrow the same battle to score
Begins

At midnight
Everyone wondering
The pulsing minds
Offers some hope
To the mothers in waiting
Another day gone
Tomorrow expectantly waiting
Occasionally one can succeed in escaping

By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-07-07.

Currency

Currency
Gathers new meaning
Trapped
In sexuality
In defence
We argue
Causality
Outside
It is a harsh
Reality

Currency
Retains old realities
Trapped
In finality
In defining
We seek
Commonality
Outside
It is the dogs
Howling

Currency
Never a fallacy
Trapped
In bartering
In chasing
We want
Acceptance
Outside
Everyone in plain sight
Hiding

No More Space

There is no more
Designated space
To bury the dead
AIDS
Takes revenge
Survivors
Settled
Next to the trenches

Age
Takes revenge
Designated voices
To defend the innocence
Age
Takes revenge
Survivors
Pushing back
Suffering relentless

There is no more
Designated places
To park your career
Ethnicity
Takes revenge
Authenticity
Trumps
This fallacy

Rhythms

The rhythm of this place
Pulsates with the travellers passing by
High speeds forcing time to their destinations
Suddenly
I am content with this station

The rhythm of this place
Settled with the pulse of the beating leaves
Stationary trees only move with the breeze
Suddenly
I am not bothered by the speed of life’s stream

The rhythm of this place
Punctuated with the low hum of country life
Every bird part of the cacophony
Suddenly
I don’t mind being slowly carried to places less harried

Wisdom Cannot be Disguised

I looked into the eyes of an old soul
Even though
We just met
I have a feeling
That I could once have wondered in her shoes
Through dark valleys
Sat with her
Mending socks at the light of the hearth
Baking bread at the fire
This is just a feeling
Instead I listen
Her tales have me in stiches
She saw a better life
Firm in belief and wishes

I looked into the eyes of a young soul
Even though
We just met
Her agility makes me mutter
A thousand silent wishes
Seeking a way to capture
Energy easily radiated
Wisdoms easily collated
A difficult life day by day navigated
It seems like
Reality was never negated
This is a first time spectator
From the outside in suddenly an insider without
We connected… no doubt

For Ouma Diena Joseph (82), we have one language and one history… I am not as acutely aware of mine as you are of yours so I yearn for that experience, as harsh as it was, you made light of it and lived to tell the stories. Thank you. By Simone Beatrice Naik Noemdoe, 2012-06-30.

Meandering Mind

Winter in retreat
Summer bounty slowly slinks away
Another day
Another place
Peace
Stares me in the face

Penned birds celebrate their voices
Free birds express different choices
Another day
Another place
Peace
Internally radiates

Wild clouds floats by
The cool breeze kisses my eyes
Another day
Another place
Peace
Eventually emanates
