Contemplation

When we
Try to escape
Wishing
Our minds were light
Issues heavy
Finds a home
Creating scenes
Which might never
Come

When we
Try to capture
Playfully
Minds light
Issues interesting
Finds a home
Creating laughter
Which might just
Stay

Revisiting old Territories

The pieces in the following post was inspired by at talk “Who is a moral person in South African township communities? This was one of the questions addressed by Associate Professor Elaine Rosa Salo in a lecture at NAI on 4 June. In the lecture she drew on her ethnographic study of gender, race and community (Manenberg on the Cape Flats).

It’s Personal

Forced removals
A disruption
Deeply personal
Its impacts still perilous
Freedom
A taste
Foreign

Forced on the corner
A group identity
Stamped in numbers
Its impacts still perilous
Freedom
An ideal
Alien

Forced to fit in
An idea common
Deeply individual
Its impacts still perilous
Freedom
A concept
Exposable

Forced to give back
An expectation
Everything has a price
Its impacts still perilous
Freedom
A ticket
Local

Colour Coded

Trapped by their codes
Conservative

Protected by their religion
Moral

Lost in their constructed realities
Traditional

Caught in their borders of confinement
Separate

Freed by their choices
Liberal

Spaces

Another way of looking
More than a post
The landing between doors
Social commentators
Moral deliberators
Living on the edge
Poverty
A common denominator

Another way of saying
More than a voice
The word on the street
Social mediators
Moral liberators
Living in the core
Pride
A common denominator

Another way of being
More than a choice
The face in the mirror
Social agitators
Moral mediators
Living to survive
‘Coloured’
A common denominator

Mixed Identities/Moral Entities

Their rules
Moralised
A community
Where
The toughest
Dare to survive

Their behaviour
Moralised
A place
Where
Race and space
Naturally unify

Their lives
Moralised
A society
Where
Being emancipated
Equals Liberation
